Thursday’s Blog – The gate and the Fool

Thursday’s Blog – The gate and the Fool

Proverbs 24:7 – Wisdom is too lofty for a fool; he does not open his mouth in the gate.

Bible Challenges and Comments
I know that when I think of a portion of scripture that it will not be long before I search it out. I praise the LORD for this since I am often encouraged by what is revealed. Have you ever sought to reach the top shelf of the china cabinet and said; “I better get the stool, otherwise those bowls that I need, will become a helmet for my head.” My version of the Proverb above!

I am reminded “daily” of the ongoing command of “to love one another even as I have loved you” John 13:34 it seems that I will never learn to sacrifice my human desire to crush the enemy with self-righteous ambitions that always linger in my heart. Having something to say at the gate (that is when the opportunity arrives) must be filtered through the Word of God; otherwise we will filter what we say from the foolish point of view of self-righteousness. The gates in life are many!

How important is the gate? Also, the gate is the door that allows a person to enter the personal realm of another soul. I say! “The gate is the opening that allows a person to enter the personal realm of another soul”. Most times human wisdom does not have permission to enter, except through the anticipated emotional strife and thus is no better that the world. If you are invited in and have nothing to say but to promote depression or guilt, then it may be wise to say “no more, than… I love you”.

This example of servant love is provided by the LORD Jesus in an earlier passage in John 13; note verse 17 – If you know these things, happy are you if you do them. The Master becomes the servant. In our relationships with people and because we are “born-again” Spiritually we are the governing authority. In other words we should not use this authority abusively. The bottom line is that if we do not love as a bond servant to others then everyone walks away unhappy. Galatians 5:13.

A few more puns
What would you call a dinosaur with and extensive vocabulary? How about this? A thesaurus!
What does a clock do why it is hungry for more? It goes back four seconds!
This morning I tried to catch some fog; “I mist”
And lastly: When the chemist died; “they barium”

Thursday’s Blog – Mama Bear and the Fool

Thursday’s Blog – Mama Bear and the Fool

Proverbs 17:12 – Let a man met a bear robbed of her cubs, rather than a fool in his folly (lack of sense).

Bible Challenges and Comments
There is a shipmate from one of the submarines we served on who reads some of the blogs and devotionals, so the other day I looked up his Facebook page to give thanks and he had posted a list of puns. And I thought I would share a few with us this morning. So here goes!

11.      Jokes about German sausage are the “wurst”
22.      A soldier who survived mustard gas and pepper spray is now considered a “seasoned veteran”.
33.      I wondered why the baseball was getting bigger, then it “hit me”.
44.      Broken pencils are (you guessed it)… “pointless”!

Most of us like a chuckle from time to time so I hope these tickle the “chuck” in you!

A more joyful thought! Recently someone said that my devotionals during this time period would no doubt be focused on the Resurrection Sunday since we are doing a presentation on Friday and Saturday of God’s Creation, the Birth, Ministry, Death and Resurrection of Our Savior and LORD, Jesus Christ.

The comment caused me to think more deeply about these five events and how these are ongoing in the Mind of God (time does not exist with God) and also what these should mean to you and me as believers in the gospel of our Savior, Jesus. First let me say that I am nowhere near understanding the full impact of this. No one could be except God Himself.

Yet, if we as saints of God want to experience the “Joy and suffering” of our salvation, we must be willing to face, study, mediate or do the diligence of involving ourselves in the “mind of God” (Philippians 2:5-11) in these awesome events. For example; think for the moment of the tremendous Power of God to accomplish “Creation, the Birth of Jesus, the Ministry of Jesus, the Death of Jesus and His Resurrection from that Death. For example: God said “Let there be light” and There was light! Genesis 1:3.

Not just light, but a Universe of it; a Word of it; a Person of it and as saints we are sons of the light, all of these natural and spiritual expressions of Light and many more are recorded for us in the Living and Holy Bible. Do the diligence and take a look. Your heart and soul will be filled with Joy and don’t forget the suffering, as to suffer in life with the LORD actually turns to joy, joy inexpressible and full of glory; 1 Peter 1:3 through 2:10.

If you have faith that God created “Light” then you have faith to trust the gospel of faith in Christ. Romans 1:16-17, the just (those who believe by faith) shall live in the light of that faith.

The apostle Paul puts these five events in perspective in 1 Corinthians, actually he uses the entire epistle to bring this to light and yet there is one section in chapter two that identifies the theme of the epistle with these words.

1 Corinthians 2:1-5 – And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. Thursday’s Blog – I Remember When

Thursday’s Blog – I Remember When

Proverbs 10:6-7 – Blessings are on the head of the Righteous, but violence cover the mouth of the wicked. The memory of the righteous is blessed, but the name of the wicked will rot.

Bible Challenges and Comments
“Some want to live within the sound of a church or chapel mainly to hear the bell toll” a friend of Billy Sunday once said. And then he added these words; “I want to run a rescue shop (mission) within a yard of hell”, C. T. Studd (1860-1931).

I was saved in May of 1975 and at time before that, Bank Street in New London, CT. was a rip roaring strip of bars and places for sailors to get drunk and later be arrested by the Navy Shore Patrol for the same reason. I did not spend many nights on Bank Street since I was married and went home most of the time, but there were occasions and I knew my way around the various bars.

After May of 1975 I spent more time on Bank Street than ever before. That would be because I met a man whose ministry at the time was to Servicemen and Servicewomen; mostly Navy and some Coast Guard folks. Once a week a few of us would go with Jay the director of the Servicemen’s Center to Bank Street and witness to the sailors walking the street, we also went bowling.

C.T. Studd’s comment reminded me immediately of those long ago days. On one of these trips Jay was confronted by a man who was not military, he was demon possessed to put it plainly. It was also the first time I saw the power of the Living Word of God reach out and calm the moment. Jay simply spoke scripture to the man and he fled away.

I learned also that Jay had operated a small haven of rest for the sailors on Bank Street. A small place where coffee and (homemade) pastry and cookies was available for anyone who wondered in, the place was quiet and comfortable and a place to hear the message that saves the souls of those who “hear” for the first time. The place was just a within a yard of hell. How do I know that?

Well… the little mission shop is gone and the work of ministry (The Christian Servicemen’s Center) operated by Jay for over thirty years has for the most part laid rest. Yet his family still bears the marks of the joys of suffering through those wonderful times. Most who knew Jay walk now under “white or grey hair” and most of us will tell you we miss those days and Jay too.

Today we do not need to go to Bank Street, in fact; “hell” is close to every person who does not know “Jesus Christ” and if you are saved and work among the unbelieving you at this moment may be less than a yard from hell.

Jesus who is the Lamb of God has removed sin from the World. The Gospel of John (the Apostle) clearly explains this TRUTH; John 1:29 – the next day John (the Baptizer) saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold” (LOOK!) the Lamb of God who takes away the SIN of the WORLD.

John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 6:29 – Jesus answered and said to them. “This is the work of God that you believe in Him whom He sent.”

John 7:38 – “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his innermost being will flow rivers of living water”. John 8:31b-32 – “If you abide in My Word, you are My disciples indeed, and you shall know the TRUTH, and the TRUTH shall set you free.” John 10:29-30 – My Father who has given them to Me is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. I and my Father are ONE.

John 11:25-26 – Jesus said to (Martha), “I am the resurrection and the life, he who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do YOU believe this? John 14:6 – “Jesus said to (Thomas), “I am the way, the TRUTH, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Well, for the sake of time let me move to the end of the gospel of John; but before I do let me just say that a person could spend a lifetime exploring the gospel of John (Jay and his family are living witnesses of people who have) and if the effects of their love for the LORD were revealed in time you would be able to see hundreds of military and their family removed from hell and all the while they spent their lives living within the boundaries of places like “Bank Street” just a yard from hell.

John 20:30-31 – And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God and that believing you may have life in His Name. And lastly; John 21:25 – And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world could not contain the books that could would be written.

Our national sin is closer to each of us than that yard to hell = Therefore we should be willing to confess our national sin and to pray for one another, that our nation may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. “You know that verse that most of us have trouble with… James 5:16 – the whole nation is sick; therefore “Let us PRAY.

Thursday’s Blog – Beatitude

Thursday’s Blog – Beatitude

Proverbs 3:1-4 – My son, do not forget my law, but let your heart keep my commands; for length of days and long life and peace they will add to you. Let not mercy and truth forsake you; bind them around your neck, write them on the table of your heart. And so find favor and high esteem in the sight of God and man (a verbal blessing)

Bible Challenges and Comments

Over the years I have often wondered why “Christendom” takes the word “blessed” and pronounces it – bless-ed! I see no reason to separate the word and make it two words. Does it make it less holy to say blessed and more holy to say bless-ed? Although some songs might suffer if we should make what I believe a necessary change as I think that the word “bless-ed” suffers from a bad case of “religion”! While “blessed” is what God does for obedient children.

For example, in Matthew 5:3 and in Luke 6:20 the first called “beatitude” says this: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Or the Luke passage in recording this leaves out the words “in spirit”. So this causes concern as to what Jesus is saying. If we were to just look at the Luke passages we could determine that all of the beatitudes were given for gratification of the flesh.

On the other hand if you include the Matthew passages you will quickly see that Matthew sets the precedence in the first beatitude by saying “poor in spirit” so the beatitudes are not meant to focus on the outward appearance of religious good works, but on the production of good from the spirit in the inner man. What might this have to do with “blessed or bless-ed”? Again for me personally, I grew up in a religion that focused on works and bless-ed was cord that binds.

When I was saved in 1975, I quickly learned that the word could be pronounced “blessed” this made all the difference and I was able to focus on the inner man and not the outward, sinful, religious and performance based one. So for me this is more than just a quirk even though I am prone to be a bit quirky. My brother explained to me just the other day that he does not like listening to me because my words make him think and he doesn’t like to think. (That of course is another story).

The bottom line to all the words above goes like this: The poor man is hated even by his own neighbor, but the rich has many friends. He who despises his neighbor sins; but he who has mercy on the poor, happy is he; Proverbs 14:20-21. And; Do not devise evil against your neighbor, for he dwells by you for safety’s sake; Proverbs 3:29.

So the provision for the first beatitude is that the kingdom of heaven is at hand for the poor in spirit because these are blessed of God, by the blessed people nearby. The Greek word “makarios” means “supremely blest”. So for me it would be reason to change the word, blessed to the word that is not a word "blest" then this truly would be a bless-ed thing. Ugh!
